Lawrence A. Moriarity, M/EqD, a certified Master Equine Dentist, performs MODERN, MOTORIZED, WHOLE MOUTH dentistry in all horses. These motorized procedures are far more thorough and much more accurate, with far less tissue damage than hand dentistry. Hand dentistry is not only obsolete , but inferior and at it's best temporary relief.
There are two major orthodontic procedures now called “Equidontics” involved. These procedures consist of re-establishing A-P (anterior-posterior) movement allowing front to rear jaw movement, which is essential for the horse to perform comfortably when his head is moving up and down. This eliminates TMJ pressure which can affect the whole body. The second procedure is re-establishing proper occlusion or normal molar contact, creating balance to the front, middle and rear of the horse’s mouth. The incisors, which do not wear off properly in our environment create molar separation causing malocclusions, affecting mastication or eating efficiency that can be severe enough to cause termination if these dental problems are not corrected. Obviously, sedation is necessary and has to be handled between the owner and veterinarian.
